Giant canoe
trip
Giant canoe is great. It is larger, faster and more
fun than a normal sized canoe. It is also known as team or travel canoe,
because it requires teamwork. Giant canoe is 7m long and it can hold 10 people
for paddle. If you plan an overnight trip then the canoe holds 7 people and
their equipment.
Giant canoes are much faster than normal sized canoes.
Their size and speed require larger body of water. In Estonia water areas
suitable for canoe trip are for example Narva River, River Emajõgi and their
reservoirs.
Alam-Pedja canoe trip main issue is Estonia’s largest
unapproachable protected wildlife and diverse network of inland waters. On the
trip we will paddle on the river Emajõgi, river Põltsamaa, river Pede and make
some circles on Lake Võrtsjärv. We will listen to local birds, howl out wolves
and look at beavers. The best time to visit the region is in autumn. On the
cool autumn nights our accommodation will be in Palupõhja nature house.
The trip will start from Lake Võrtsjärv Visitor Centre
were we leave our cars. When the weather is good enough, we will start our trip
by taking a tour on Lake Võrtsjärv. Then we will paddle along river Emajõgi and
take our equipment to Palupõhja nature house.
Before the sundown we will be going back to the river,
because then will things be truly exciting. On the old parts of river Emajõgi
beavers habitat the area. Slowly and silently we will paddle to one of the
beaver nests and if we’re lucky perhaps we will be able to observe a beaver. As
the night falls, we will glide down the river and try to hear howling wolves. In
autumn wolves teach their young how to howl and communicate.
In the evening we will have sauna and share our
story’s about the day by the fireplace.
On the second day of our trip we will paddle on river
Pede and river Põltsamaa. Our trip ends by the Laashoone bridge. On our second
day we will see different types of river landscape. First the forceful and
quick-flowing river Emajõgi. Then still, broad, straight and dark watered river
Pede and for last narrow, tight and curvy river Põltsamaa.
